Schoerr Grate Outfits

On pages 3 to 17 of this catalog we show our
lines of Gas, Direct Draft and Return Draft Grate
Outfits, and also Portable Basket Grates, Gas Logs,
Trimmings, etc.

Any one of these Grates can be used with any
of the Mantels shown on pages 18 to 30, and we
guarantee all of them to be equal in every respect
to whatever claims we make for them. (See our
guarantee on preceding page.) We recommend,
however, where a Coal Grate is desired, that Our
Aldine Return Draft Open Fire Place be used. It
will give more heat' with less waste, burn less coal
and require less attention than other types of Coal
Grates. The principle of this Grate is fully ex-
plained on pages 3 to 6. It is well worthy of your
careful investigation.

OUTFITS— By an Outfit we mean the different
parts to complete the Mantel, such as Grate, Tile
or Metal Facing, Hearth, etc., as follows :

In the Aldine Grates, Outfits Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
and 6, the entire Grate complete in every respect,
including Summer Front, Narrow Fender, Blower,
Shaker and Poker,

In the Radium, Wolverine and X-Ray Grates,
Outfits Nos. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, the entire Grate,
including the Frame with Summer Front, with Brick
or Iron Fire Liners ready to set into the chimney.

In the Electric, Outfit No. 13, the Fire-place, Tile
or Metal Facing and Hearth,

In Unmounted Grates, Outfits Nos, 14, 15, 16
and 17, the entire Grate, including Frame, Fire Basket
and Summer Front.

In Gas Grates, Outfits Nos. 18, 19, 20 and 21,
the entire Grate, including the Frame with Summer
Front, ready to be set into place.

With any of the above complete Grates is also
included in an Outfit the Facing, either Metal Plate
or Tile, and the Tiling for Hearth.

PRICES — Below the description of each Grate
we give the price of the entire outfit. Prices of the
separate parts of the outfits will be found on page

13. There is no extra charge for Summer Front,
Narrow Fender, Blower, Shaker and Poker,

FACING — Outfits as described in this book are
furnished with Metal Plate Facing, shown on page

14. Tile Facing can be had at the same price as
Metal Plate Facing if ordered unslabbed, or we can
furnish tile slabbed for $2,75 extra. Slabbed Tile are
cemented together and reinforced by metal strips.
Slabbed Tile Facing is shipped in three pieces, ready
to be set up.

We recommend that our customers use Metal
Plate Facings. They are much more desirable than
Tile Facings, inasmuch as they do not crack or
break. They are easily put up and always stay in
place.

If sample of hardware is furnished us, we will
finish Fireplace to match. Unless style ordered is
in stock, it will take a little longer to ship.

HOW TO ORDER— In ordering any Grate
Outfit specify plainly what kind, style and size of
facing is wanted, and the size of the Grate, i. e., the
height and width of the front. There are two stan-
dard sizes, viz., 24j^ inches wide by 30j4 inches
high, and 30>^ inches wide by 30^4 inches high. It
is also advisable in ordering either the Radium or
the Aldine to give the height, width and depth of
the Fireplace opening in the chimney in which the
Grate is intended to go. With the above informa-
tion we can fill orders intelligently; otherwise there
is always a possibility of mistake.

Schoerr Mantels

MATERIAL AND WORKMANSHIP — The

wood used in making o*ur Mantels is carefully select-
ed, only the best pieces being used. It is thoroughly
seasoned and kiln dried before being made up.

We employ only the most skilled workman in
our shops. Every Mantel we ship is perfectly made
and fitted. We guarantee the material, workman-
ship and finish to be better than any other Mantels
on the market at equal prices. See our guarantee
on preceding page.

FINISH — Every one of our Mantels goes
through seven different operations in our finishing
room.

If the finish is to be a golden oak gloss, we first
stain the Mantel; then we put on a filler of best
quality. The first coat of varnish is applied next,
after which the Mantel is sand-papered all over.

Then the second coat of varnish is applied and the
Mantel again sand-papered all over. For a finish-
ing coat, a gloss varnish is put on.

If the Mantel is to be rubbed and polished, we go
through the same seven operations as with the
gloss finish, except that the last coat is of rubbing
varnish. After this has been applied, the ManteHs
rubbed by hand, and afterward polished, also by
hand.

DELIVERY — We carry Mantels shown on the
following pages in stock and can make shipments
in a very few days. All Mantels are shipped ready
to be set in place. They are carefully crated, with-
out extra charge, and we guarantee safe delivery.

Mantels are shipped from our factory in Mich-
igan, from where customers pay the freight.

See Terms on page 32.

The Aldine Open Fire Place

The Aldine Open Fire-place cannot be compared with
the common Direct-Draught Grates offered by all other
manufacturers. It is a heater, and has often taken the
place of stove or furnace. It is made on the return-draft
principle, and will save more than 60 per cent, of the fuel
and more than 85 per cent, of the heat, which Direct-
Draft Grates waste. By means of our special Top
Damper Attachment, the "Aldine" will heat upper and
lower adjoining rooms, and, if the chimney be in the right
place, one "Aldine" will do the work of four common
Direct-Draft Grates.
' The Aidine not only furnishes a greater amount of heat
from less fuel, by direct radiation, but, in addition, as
much more heat by indirect-radiation, and the heat pro-
duced by both direct and indirect-radiation is kept in con-
stant circulation, producing a perfect ventilation.

Plate No, 26 shows that
• the product of combustion

when Damper G is turned
to the left, pass from Fire-
pot into Flue H, down Flue
I, around Ash Dupip L, and
up Flue J through a rad-
iating surface of 30 square
feet before entering the
chimney K, a large per-
centage of the heat-bearing
gases thus being consumed
in the Flues and utilized.
Referring to plate No. 25,
it will be observed that
the Fire-pot, Flues and
Ash Pan are incased
in an iron jacket,
forming an air cham-
ber. When the Fire-
pot A, the Flues B, C
and D become heat-
ed, they form a rad-
iating surface of
thirty square feet
over which the cold
air, entering open-
ings at either side
of base at E, is

No. 25

passed, heated, purified,
and thrown out into the
room through register "F,
keeping up a constant cir-
culation, taking the cold
air oflE the floor and dis-
tributing heated air equal-
ly throughout the room,
keeping the temperature
the same in all parts of
the room from floor to ceil-
ing, the atmosphere pure
and wholesome at all
times, and ventilating per-
fectly without drafts.

The "Aldine" can be
piped to any chimney, like
a common stove, if de-
sired, burns hard or soft
coal, wood, coke, natural or
artificial gas with perfect
combustion — absolutely no
waste of fuel — and keeps
fire night and day as long
as wanted, and without
dust, gas or smoke in the
room.

The Aldine Open Fire-
place is built in several

styles of the finest Stove Plate Iron, is mounted in one
piece, and Weighs 500 pounds, crated and boxed ready for
shipment. It can be set by any intelligent mason by fol-
lowing our simple instructions. The opening in the chim-
ney breast to admit the "Aldine" should be 32 inches high
(but 30 inches will do), 26 inches wide (but 24 inches will
do) and 12 inches deep.

The "Aldine" saves the use of the furnace, steam or
hot water plant at least six weeks in the fall and spring,
the saving in fuel being equal within a very short time to
the first cost of the "Aldine;" while, during the most se-
vere weather, the "Aldine" can be used in connection with
the other heating apparatus without any additional expense
for fuel, as the heat produced by both will be circulated by
the "Aldine" thoroughly throughout the room and the tem-
perature kept equal from floor to ceiling, while, at the
same time giving perfect ventilation and a cheerful open
fire.

No. 26

Differences Between the Aldine Open Fire Place
and All Other Open Grates

All other Grates and Fire-places, no matter under what
name or claims they are sold, are of the Direct Draft pat-
tern; i. e., they are connected directly with the chimney,
and the gases of combustion are sucked entirely up into
the chimney flue by reason of its draft. The stronger the
draft the greater the suction of these gases, and conse-
quently greater loss of the heat generated by the fuel.

The following are the principal differences between the
Aldine and these Grates, and consequently its advantages to
the purchaser:

First. All other grates are directly connected with the
chimney as described above, and the average loss of the
total heat generated on account of this is 85%. The Aldine
being indirectly connected with the chimney and the gases
of combustion having to pass entirely through the body of
the Grate before escaping into the chimney flue saves this
heat lost by the Direct Draft Grates, and at the same time
requires only 40% of the fuel required by these other
Grates to produce these greater heating results.

Second. All other grates must be filled every hour or
so, and shaken down three or four times every day in
order to keep the fire alive and bright. The Aldine needs
to be filled only morning and night when hard coal is used,
and at each filling requires only about one-half scuttle of
coal. It also needs to be shaken down only at these times
also. The same proportion of difference in attention in
favor of the Aldine is carried out in the use of all other
fuels.

Third. All other grates simply throw the direct heat
which does not go up the chimney into a small space in

the room, there being no circulation to force it out what-
ever; consequently the warmth coming from the heat is
confined in a space of a few cubic feet immediately around
the front of the Grate. The Aldine by reason of its com-
plete base burning circulating principle discharges, both
directly and indirectly, the heat generated into the room
with suflicient force to drive It into all part? of the room.
When this heat becomes cool and heavy and sinks to the
floor, by reason of its circulating plan it is sucked into the
bottom of the grate, thoroughly heated and purified, and
discharged again into the room, thus creating a complete
and perfect circulation of pure hot air. This is well illus-
trated in plate 34.

Fourth. All other Grates by reason of their direct and
open connection with the chimney simply draw the air out
of the room and discharge it up into the chimney, thus
vitiating the atmosphere of the room, and requiring new
air to be brought in from time to time. The Aldine does
not draw in all the air permanently from the room, but by
reason of its circulating prmciple draws the heavy impure
cold air from the floor, thoroughly heats and purifles it
and discharges it again into the room at a high tempera-
ture and perfect state of purity. No other Grate will dis-
tribute its heat so that it will heat even the whole of a
good sized room. The Aldine will not only completely
heat the room in whi«h it is placed by reason of its cir-
culating principle, but in addition can be piped like a
furnace, when equipped with our special Top Damper At-
tachment, so that it will heat two and even three adjoin-
ing or upper rooms in addition, and keat them all satis-
factorily. See next page.

The Aldine Used to Heat
More Than One Room

The illustrations on tliis page show how the Aldine Open
Fire-place can be set and piped to heat adjoining and up-
per rooms. When used in this way a furnace can be dis-
pensed with altogether in climates where there is no ex-
treme cold, and even in cold climates the Aldine will take
the place of a furnace during the chill autumn and spring
months.

Plate No. 32 shows the Aldine set in a partition wall,
and giving its heat into both rooms. The back of the Fire-
place and the Smoke Pipe are enclosed in a false chimney
of lath, and plastering on studding. The cold air passes
into the register at the base of this (as shown by the ar-
rows) following along up the pipe thoroughly heated and
discharged into the room again, through the register at E.
The back of Grate is thoroughly encased in brick work,
so that no possible danger of fire exists.

Plate No. 34 represents the Aldine set for heating one
room below and two above; one with register in base-
board, the other with False Outfit and Summer Front, giv-
ing a very artistic and cheerful effect. Note how the Hot
Air Flue is bricked off just above the registers. The smoke
pipe extends beyond this point so there is no possibility
of smoke passing into the rooms with the heated air.

Plate No. 32

Savings of the Aldine

Saving of fuel — The Aldine consumes each twenty-four
hours only 25 pounds of hard coal, and with this will main-
tain a continuous bright red fire, thus producing the great-
est possible number of heat units from the fuel consumed.
With soft coal, coke, wood or any other fuel, only slightly
more attention is required to produce the same results,
and its superiority over any other fire-place in this regard
is so marked that it may be fairly said that it is in a
class by itself.

Saving from dirt — The fact that the Aldine requires to
be shaken down only twice each twenty-four hours, and
that it is equipped with a special device by which the very
small amount of dust and dirt which might result from
shaking it down is immediately drawn up into the chimney
out of the room, justifies us in making the broad assertion
that it is practicially absolutely clean.

Saving of trouble— The Aldine is the only Fire-place
ever made that does not have to be re-flUed or otherwise
given attention at least every two hours and sometimes
oftener. The Aldine requires this attention only twice dur-
ing twenty-four hours: i. e., morning and night, and be-
tween these times maintains a perfe^ly uniform and satis-
factory fire and heat. '^^ *:

Saving of lost heat — The Aldine by reSt^ra^of its special
construction loses up the chimney flue only about 15% of
the heat generated by the fuel. All other fire-places, on the
contrary, being directly connected with the chimney flue,
waste over 85%, on the average, of this heat. Thus it will
be seen that the Aldine with the use of much less fuel de-
livers to the user over six times the actual amount of heat
produced by any other grate.

SUPERIORITY

First. Burns only 40% of the fuel required by all other
grates.

Second. Loses only 15% of the heat generated up the
chimney instead of 85% lost by all other grates.

Third. Gives perfect ventilation of the room by draw-
ing the cold air from the floor, thoroughly reheating and
purifying it, and discharging it again upward into the room.

Fourtli. Maintains a bright red fire constantly day and
night, thus securing the greatest possible number of heat
units from the fuel consumed.

Fifth. Needs to be filled and cleaned only twice during
twenty-four hours when hard coal is used, only slightly
oftener when other fuels are used.

Sixth. Saves the use of the furnace, steam or hot

ing in fuel thus effected being equal in a very short time

out any additional expense for fuel, as the amount of fuel
it uses is more than saved in the furnace.

in any room, and piped like a stove any reasonable dis-
tance to the nearest chimney, and will work just as well
as though it were set directly in the chimney.

Aldine Odorless Gas Grate

Our patented "Odorless" Gas Grate is the only
one ever produced that is absolutely without odor.
This result is accomplished by securing perfect com-
bustion and avoids the necessity of chimney flue or
ventilating pipe.

This Grate is built entirely of best Stove Plate
castings, the best heat radiating material known.
After being burned for a few minutes at full pres-
sure, until the radiating plate is well heated, it will
give off full heat at half or two-thirds pressure.

By using a special adjustable supply valve we

enable any user to regulate the Grate to any kind
or any pressure of gas. The process is perfectly
simple — any one can operate it easily.

This Grate can be placed in any part of a room
with perfect safety, no chimney or other ventilating
flue being required.

On the following page we show two styles in
which our Odorless Gas Grate is made, outfits Nos.
20 and 21. Outfits Nos. 18 and 19 are Single Mixer
Gas Grates.

tf ,. " ^1 ^ ''i

WHY ODORLESS GAS GRATES WILL
NEVER SMELL.

This diagram of our Burner Plate and Mixer (fully
covered by patents) illustrates it.
A — Burner Plate.
B — Mixing Tubes.
C — Supply Box, regulated to suit pressure or quality of

Gas.
D — Adjustment, perfectly simple and absolutely reliable.
Any one can handle it and get best results.

It is well known that the proper method of securing perfect
combustion in gas burners, whereby all of the gas is burned up and
none left to smell, is the taking in of a proper proportion of air or
oxygen, to mix with the gas. This proportion is 80 per cent of
air to 20 per cent of gas, and where such a mixture is obtained the
flame will be a pure blue and perfectly odorless, because all of the
gas is burned and none is left to escape into the surrounding at-
mosphere. It is not the burned gas which smells, but the escaping
unburned gas.

In order to accomplish the above results in our Odorless Gas
Grate, the only one of the kind ever put on the market that was suc-
cessful, we adopted a mixing plan, viz., the taking in of the air to
mix with the gas, entirely different from that used on any other
grate and fully covered by patents. Where all other grates have
simply one inlet for air, it will be noted from the accompanying il-
lustration that we equip ours with five of these inlets, thus increas-
ing the intake of air to the'correct proportion, and as all of thes-
grates are carefully tested and adjusted before beiag sent out of o'^
factory, they will always be found to be absolute y accurate.

Metal Mantel Plate Facings

Metal Mantel Plates for facing take the place of
tile, are better and less expensive, because:

First. They are made of the finest Stove Plate
iron, in only three pieces (one top and tv^o sides).
These are securely bolted together and screwed
to the back of the Mantel. Tile Facings, on the other
hand, are made up of many small pieces, which may
loosen and fall out and can be only insecurely fas-
tened in place by wires.

Second. They are finished in the same Electro-
plate Finish as the Fireplace Front, a harmonious and
handsome effect. This finish will stand up always
and can be easily cleaned. Tile are not uniform in
design or color, and show great numbers of fine

cracks after a short time. These absorb dirt, which
can not be cleaned out, and thus the appearance
of the facing is permanently ruined.

Third. There is no danger of breakage in ship-
ment of Metal Mantel Plates, whereas Tile Fac-
ings, being very fragile, often arrive damaged from
rough handling.

Fourth. Metal Mantel Plates are absolutely uni-
form in size, while Tile Facings must necessarily vary
somewhat.

^Any design metal plate facing can be used with
any of the grate outfits shown in this catalog, providing
metal plate facing fits mantel to be used. See note
under each illustration.
